Director of the Tamba Antique Pottery Museum and Sasayama Nohgaku Museum
The Tamba Sasayama Townscape Art Festival was born in September 2009, centered around the scenic area of the Kawaramachi Tsumairi Merchants’ Houses, a Nationally Designated Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It was born from the combined efforts of those working to preserve the townscape and artists who were captivated by the townhouse space. Next year, in 2026, will mark the festival’s 10th anniversary. Invited artists, artists with ties to Tamba Sasayama City, and artists from the Tamba region (Kyoto Prefecture and Hyogo Prefecture) will each blend their refined sensibilities and techniques into the historic architecture.
The townscape has been cleared of utility poles, and an increasing number of young people are strolling around the area, even when there are no events.
The festival has continued under the slogan “Transforming Townhouses into Art Museums.” We hope to discuss future developments at this symposium.
